The gate of the Porto Palermo tunnel opens after 32 years

This represents the inaugural phase of a project initiated by the Ministry of Defense, which aims to revitalize and rehabilitate the comprehensive infrastructural network within Panorma Bay, facilitating both military and civilian operations. The project’s objective is to ensure the effective governance of the area, which has begun to emerge as a prominent tourist destination. This will be achieved by adhering to environmental standards and providing optimal navigational safety conditions.
The subsequent phase will entail the non-invasive adaptation of the facilities of the complex, which are no longer utilized for military purposes, with the objective of establishing a sustainable tourist attraction.

Additionally, the objective is to restore these invaluable assets of the Naval Force to a state of operational readiness, thereby enabling their utilization in national and international exercises.

The opening of the tunnel was conducted under the direction of the engineering staff of the Genius Battalion and proceeded without incident, despite the tunnel having been out of use for over three decades.

The tunnel served as an autonomous base for the shelter and safe passage of naval vessels during the period in which the peninsula of Porto Palermo was under the control of the naval forces.

The opening of the steel gate of this water tunnel, which is lined with reinforced concrete, has initiated the mechanism for the first time in a considerable period of time.

The construction of the tunnel commenced in 1969 and was completed in 1988. It served as a protected base for the shelter and safe passage of naval vessels during that period.
